Guinea Pig Breeds

At Joshmitran Pet Aviarry we regularly bring in some of the best guinea pigs breeds. Most of our guinea pigs are sourced from exhibitions around the world whereby the best  of the breeds are displayed and contested. We acquire this specimens direct from the exhibition.Guinea pigs are one of the most popular pet among pet enthusiast. It has been domesticated ca. 5000 BC. There are many different breeds of guinea pigs from long haired to shorter haired varieties. Though there are many breeds of guinea pig, only a few breeds are commonly found on the show table as pets. Below is a list of the most common types of guinea pigs found as pet. This is not an all-inclusive list and other breeds may be available. Many cavies can have regular or satin hair. Satins have finer hair with a natural sheen that glistens.

Peruvian

The Peruvian guinea pig are a most beautiful breed of guinea pig. They are extremely hard breed’s to find and so are a bit of a rarity and for those that own a Peruvian guinea pig.


Abyssinian

The Abyssinian has tall round swirls of hair all over its body and come in a variety of colors as well as satin



Crested

These guinea pigs are smooth and short-haired but also have a swirl of hair on the forehead. A cavy with a white swirl and the rest of the hair a different color is known as a White Crested.



Coronet

These pigs are a combination of Cresteds and Silkies. They have long hair as well as the swirl of hair on the forehead.


Teddy

The Teddy has fuzzy or frizzy hair that stands up, like a teddy bear. It comes in a variety of colors as well as satin.


American

The American is a smooth, short-haired cavy with a rounded body and comes in a variety of colors as well as satin. This is the most common and calmest of all the guinea pigs.


Skinny

These are almost hairless guinea pigs. Other than a few short hairs they are mostly naked.


Texel

The Texels have a long curly coat and require a lot of grooming.
